The surfaces of painted and unpainted finished plaster could also be coated with a varnish, shiny or matte, to protect the surface. Plaster (also called chalk or chalkware) lent itself to a higher degree of detail and specificity, to greater precision in surface effects and texture, and also provided a surface well suited to paint, and thus to polychromatic images and objects. Once hardened, the molds are removed and the surfaces are sanded or worked in various ways and with a range of tools, to smooth, refine, and ornament. On occasion other binding agents, like glue, might be added to the liquid mixture to yield different working surfaces. In its liquid forms, it is poured into molds to produce all manner of decorative objects. It is commonly used to precast and hold parts of ornamental plasterwork placed on ceilings and cornices.
ART DECO BOOKENDS CRACK
Because it does not generally shrink or crack when dry, plaster of paris made it an excellent medium for casting molds. These deco bookends, like many items of the era, are made of Plaster of paris, a quick-setting gypsum plaster consisting of a fine white powder which hardens when moistened and allowed to dry. Known since ancient times, plaster of paris is so called because of its preparation from the abundant gypsum found near Paris. All items come from a smoke free environment. (Books not included.) Please look closely at all photographs, as they are part of the description. They are nice and heavy (over 8 lbs) and are really excellent bookends. There are four felt pads on the bottom of each one to prevent furniture scratches. They do however have several little nicks and scratches to the painted marble finish from over 70 years of use. They are in good, previously owned vintage condition with no cracks, breaks or repairs and no major chips or damage. These awesome deco bookends are most likely European. Geometric in design, they are comprised of a double stepped base with a 'cube' balanced on its corner creating the focal point. They measure 6" at the back H X 5 1/2" in length X 3 5/16" wide X approximately 3/4" thick.
